Hams and Lambs

A Nodines ham is a real treat. Yes, it’s expensive in comparison to supermarket hams, but it’s like comparing a Stouffers frozen lasagna to Chef Antonio’s lasagna.A Ford Pinto to a BMW. Apples to kumquats. You get the idea. Just not in the same league. If you’ve had Nodines, we don’t have to convince you, but if not, we suggest you try one at least once and we think you’ll agree with Chef Mario Batali that “it’s the best ham known to mankind”.

Nodines is a small smokehouse in Torrington, just off Rt 8. It’s a family business that has been making ham, as well as other smoked products, for over 20 years. What makes a Nodines ham so superior? Unlike mass produced supermarket hams, a Nodines ham isn’t pumped with water or chemicals. These hams are smoked using real smoke from hardwoods – not the artificial “smoke” flavoring that is used in the supermarket hams. Not only is a Nodines ham gluten free, but it’s also much less salty than most other artisanal hams. Hams are fully cooked and may be eaten at room temperature or reheated. We’ll provide reheating instructions when you pick up your ham.

Deadline for ordering for Easter is Tuesday, April 11 but we recommend you don’t wait until the last minute. They usually sell out.

How large a ham to order? Figure on about 1/3 to 1/2 lb per person. The half hams are usually 7 to 8 lbs. The whole hams run 15 to 18 lbs.
